Field trip White Istria

Ekskurzija Bijela Istra i kamenolomi Kirmenjak i Fantazija

The first part of the field trip will visit the White Istria – the area of Ćićarija and Učka in the northeast and east of the Istrian peninsula. It is a mountainous part of Istria, a morphologically elevated, karst area built of Cretaceous and Palaeogene limestones. Ćićarija with its characteristc imbricate and thrust structure and the northern part of Učka with its folded and thrust structure are an example of the convergent relationship between Istria and the hinterland, i.e. they represent the contact area of the folded-thrust belt of the northwestern edge of the External Dinarides and stable Istria, as undeformed part of the Adriatic microplate.

The second part of the field trip will include two well-known quarries in the area of the Western Istrian anticline: (3) Fantazija Quarry Geological Natural Monument, which represents a unique example of the alteration of genetically different types of dolomite with extremely well-preserved textures and structures, and (4) Kirmenjak Quarry − the largest and stratigraphically oldest dinosaur tracksite in Croatia situated in Upper Tithonian stylolitized limestones.

The second part of the field trip will include two well-known quarries in the area of the Western Istrian anticline: (3) Fantazija Quarry Geological Natural Monument, which represents a unique example of the alteration of genetically different types of dolomite with extremely well-preserved textures and structures, and (4) Kirmenjak Quarry − the largest and stratigraphically oldest site of dinosaur footprints in Croatia found within stylolitized limestones of Upper Tithonian age.

The field trip A3 will include lunch in the restaurant "Danilea" in Ročko polje.
